Welcome to the web page of the
Ward 10 Democratic Committee

Overview

Our mission is to elect Democrats at every level, build community and strengthen the grassroots power of the Democratic Party, and influence issues on the national, state, and local level.  We do everything from running campaigns and advocating policies to holding signs and distributing literature.  We also get involved in neighborhood issues.  The Ward 10 Democratic Committee welcomes your participation as a member, an associate member, a building or block captain, or a volunteer.

We are represented at the State House by Rep. Alice Wolf (precincts 1 and 2), Rep. William Brownsberger (precinct 3),   Sen . Steven Tolman (precincts 1 and 3) and [new state senator to be elected in special election, primary April 13 and general election May 11] (precinct 2).

New

The Ward 10 Committee met on March 27 to set its goals for 2010 and develop a series of actions to achieve those goals. The Committee plans to do a neighborhood clean-up, door-to-door voter registration, and hold a picnic for interested Democrats, at dates to be announced. The Committee will hold its next meeting on April 29 at 6:30 pm at the same site as the CDCC meeting that night. The meeting agenda will focus on electing officers for the 2010-2012 term.

2009 Activities

This year we are building support for policy issues that matter to people in Cambridge. So far this year, we were out:

  • at the Porter Square T on a chilly March 31 handing out literature on transportation reform and the options for using a gas tax increase to avoid MBTA and commuter rail fare increases/service cuts.
  • at the T on May 28, promoting the Green Streets Initiative, which focuses on protecting the environment by encouraging people to walk or ride their bicycles, rather than using their cars.
  • on June 13 collecting food for the Helping Hand Pantry of the St. James Episcopal Church in Porter Square. Many Cambridge folks participated by contributing extra cans, packages, and jars of non-perishable foods which we picked up from their houses and delivered to the church.
  • at the T on July 22 handing out leaflets on CORI reform (changing the way criminal records are released to prospective employers and others), in connection with a legislative hearing on July 27.
  • at the T on September 2 and 3 registering new voters for the upcoming municipal and U.S. senate races.
  • at the T on October 2 promoting the expanded bottle bill filed by Rep. Alice Wolf and scheduled for public hearing October 7

Get Involved

You can become a member or an associate member.  Associates get notice of city committee & ward committee meetings, and notice of local Democratic events.  While we'd love to have associates attend meetings and volunteer for the Democratic Party, there are no obligations.  Associates who are willing to make a commitment can be elected full Ward Committee members when there is an opening. To become an associate member, you must be registered to vote as a Democrat in Ward 10, and contact us (lfield1007@aol.com).

Join our "Building a Democratic Governor" project.  We want to have a "building captain" in every large building (over 10 voters) and a "block captain" on every block.  Our captains will help register voters, talk to their neighbors about the election, distribute literature, and help turnout the vote.  You can do something tangible to make a difference, in your own building or street.  If you want to hear more, contact us (lfield1007@aol.com).

Volunteer.  You can do as little or as much as you want!  Contact us (lfield1007@aol.com).

Neighborhood Issues

We are currently following a proposed hotel on the site of the Kaya Restaurant on Massachusetts Avenue, as well as Lesley University's potential development plans in the neighborhood.
